New Feature: History & Transcript

We are happy to introduce new features in the chat history module. Now it is easier to search, sort, and export the archive (chat transcript).

To see the changes, you need to login to your admin panel and open the chat settings.

So, what’s new?

Export Chat Transcript

Now, when you want to export your chat archive based on criteria, you have now two options, CSV or as HTML. This lets users export the transcript and open the history in Excel or as HTML.

When exporting to HTML, it is easy to add the archive (e.g., content) to any website and by doing that to increase relevant keywords SEO (chat transcript that was done on your website, consists of highly targeted keywords).

Sorting Chat Options

You can now sort the history in the admin panel to get better access to your data.
Sorting is done by simply clicking on one of the 3 fields.

  • Time
  • User Name
  • Text

Chat Transcript Quick Search

Technology: with a new technology added to the admin panel to the archive section, we added some load distribution between back-end and front-end that makes searches even quicker.

Note: History is available only for group chat; private chats cannot be exported (due to legal reasons).

Yesterday Is History… Chat History and Logs

How much of a chat is archived can vary greatly from one chat to the next. While customer service chats will often keep the entire conversation on file—and sometimes even offer to send a copy of the chat history to an email address—this is not always the case.

Many online chats, for example on fan sites, do not keep logs at all. Instead, they are set up to automatically delete messages. This usually happens either after a certain amount of time has elapsed, or a certain amount of messages have been posted. Depending on the setup of the chat, the conditions vary greatly.

For example:

  • Anonymous chats that keep nothing but a few messages
  • Chats that save on a day-by-day basis.
  • Chats that allow you to save the transcript and go over it when you are offline.

The thing they all have in common, however, is that it’s rarely up to the user to decide. They may get a choice on whether or not to have a transcript or a few similar options, but full customization is another story altogether.

Chat History Customizations and More

RumbleTalk offers the full suite. Whether you want to keep every message sent or even per session for limited periods of time, anything is possible.

RumbleTalk chat supports exporting the chat history at any given point. This could be after each session, in the middle of one, or even days later. It is also possible to keep no chat history at all. If you choose this option, all messages will disappear when the chat is closed and are not saved at all. Similarly, if you want to keep a limited history, go right ahead.

It is also possible to use one chat room for multiple conversations. You can manually clear the cache (clear archive) of it to make it “as good as new” each time. And you can seamlessly combine this with keeping backups and saving the previous conversations whenever you want. Sometimes it can be more convenient to have several rooms to be able to have more conversations at once, but even then the history settings are individual.

While it is possible to administer several chats in the background, they can absolutely have different settings, depending entirely on your needs. Something like a client chat can have complete records kept, while an internal team chat may not need nearly as much in the way of permanent history.

When you want to export your backups and save files is also up to you. How long they are available depends on the type of keeping history choosing, but the files are downloadable anywhere and anytime.

How to Save a Group Chat Transcript …or Not

True to our mission, we’ve even designed our chat transcript saving options to be versatile.

There are two settings that affect your group chat archive and how you and your users access that chat transcript. Depending on whether you want your full conversation available at all times, saved for later, or not at all, you’ll want to ensure your settings match your preferences.

Once you are logged into the Admin Panel, navigate to the Archive tab under Settings. There you’ll see two options.

  1. Enable archiving
  2. Show archived messages in the chat

This post will explain the effect of each combination of selecting these options. For more information on why or how to export chat transcripts, click here.

If you select both

Save chat transcript history and show in chatSelecting both options will allow the group chat owner and users to see and export the full chat transcript.

From within the group chat window, any user will be able to scroll up to see the chat transcript.

For a user, the export option within the group chat room will only export those messages currently in the window. However, from the admin panel, the group chat owner can export the entire chat history saved on the RumbleTalk servers.

Data saved on the RumbleTalk servers is stored for three months.

If you select only “Enable archiving”

Yes and no for saving the transcript

In this scenario, the full chat history, saved on RumbleTalk’s servers, will only be accessible to the group chat owner from the admin panel. Again, this archive goes back three months.

Group chat users will not be able to see messages that were sent before they entered the group chat room.

If you select only “show archived messages in the chat”

This will prevent the group chat owner from being able to see or export the group chat archive from the admin panel and messages will not be saved on the RumbleTalk servers.

Users will still be able to export the conversation existing in the window post-login. When all users have logged out, the conversation will no longer be available.

chat transcript decision: In case you do not select either

No archive

If neither option is selected, the conversation will not be saved on the RumbleTalk servers, and users will not be able to see the messages sent prior to their login.

Up to 50 messages sent post-login will be available within the group chat window. It is still possible to export these from the within group chat window unless modified using CSS.
